As burglaries and theft increase in our economy and communities, it has a poor impact on municipal statistics, home sales, and quality of life of the victims, neighbors, and residents. We may not have direct control over the
economy nor the motives of criminals. But, we do have control to deter and minimize opportunity for crime to happen to us.
An important and low maintenance deterrent for the residents of Port Norfolk would be to make the back entrances of our homes less accessible to criminals and people with no gainful interest. Currently, our public alleys are a concealed and shaded haven for illegal activity such as drug deals, prostitution, burglaries, home invasions, and vehicle and pedestrian traffic scouting potential homes to invade and break into. This creates personal safety issues for all Port Norfolk residents who need access to our yards, access to our trash cans, and parking at night. And more importantly, it creates an immediate safety concern for our children who enjoy biking, playing, and meeting their backdoor friends in the alleys.
What will this deter criminals from doing?
-scouting our homes
-breaking into and invading our homes
-stealing our hard earned valuables and property
-selling drugs to neighbors, bringing other drug users to our neighborhood, and opening opportunity for drugs to be sold to our children
-committing sexual acts within our view and the view of our children
-attacking us when we take out our trash
-robbing us at gun point
-hurting our children and pets
and becoming a victim like those in recent rapes and homicides in the city
How will this be beneficial to our city and our neighborhood?
-It will lower municipal costs in maintainence and upkeep of alley ways due to less traffic
-It will improve citywide crime statistics, home sales, and home values
-It will give us the confidence necessary to report more noticable strangers and suspicious activity
-It will give our police officers necessary authority to successfully question and convict trespassers, criminals and portential criminals reported and noticed
-It will improve the quality of our lives and our children making our own alleys more attractive and desirable for children, pets, gardens, and parking.
Our community is loved by many and offers so much. Let's be proactive and by making sure our beloved Port Norfolk and city gives us the quality of life we expect! Thank you for your time!
